How a Simple Lesson in Whisking Became a Memorable Cultural Experience

At Kyoto Matcha Experience, we often say that every guest brings their own story — and this one touched our hearts.

A few weeks ago, a wonderful group of six travelers from Georgia visited us. They first stopped by to ask if they could have some matcha tea. I explained that our place isn’t a café, but a hands-on matcha-making experience, much like a small cultural class where you learn to whisk and enjoy matcha yourself.

They seemed very interested. Later that evening, two of them made a reservation for the next day — and to my surprise, they actually came back!

Discovering the True Way to Whisk Matcha

When they arrived, they told me they often whisk matcha at home and even own a chasen (bamboo whisk) and chasen stand. I was so impressed by how much they loved Japanese tea culture.

During the experience, I shared one simple but important tip:

“Don’t press the whisk against the bottom of the bowl — move it quickly and lightly, as if you’re drawing on the surface of the tea.”

The gentleman suddenly smiled and said:

“Ah, that’s why my whisk always broke! I was whisking it like beating an egg!” 🥚

It was such a heartwarming moment — you could see the joy of discovery on his face.

A Cup of Matcha, A Moment of Connection

They both left with big smiles, a deeper understanding of the beauty behind Japanese matcha, and of course, a new chasen to take home as a special souvenir. 🌿

Moments like these remind us why we love what we do — every guest learns something new, and every experience becomes a gentle bridge between cultures.
